The FEU Alumni Foundation, Inc. (FEUAFI) in cooperation with the Alumni Relations and Placement Services (ARPS) and the Volunteer Service Office (VSO), held the annual “Christmas Cheers for Children” at the Golden Shower Covered Court of Bgy. Payatas-B in Quezon City on Saturday, December 10, 2016. The annual outreach program of FEUAFI is an opportunity for the alumni community to get involved in community welfare activities and focus on an improved quality of life for the poor. For student volunteers, this compliments their classroom experience. The community of Palates is a 220-hectare informal settlement area in the center of District II of Quezon City which became an open dumpsite for more than 30 years. Scavengers continued activities on the site despite the order to close it in 1998. Hence, the increased number of families are currently residing in the area.
Ms. Maria Velasco, the president of the FEU Institute of Education Alumni Association, an active advocate of education and community empowerment, took the lead in coordinating with the barangay officials, parents and children of Barangay Payatas-B. Mr. Victoriano Cruz, the President of FEUAFI, delivered an inspirational message to the youth, sharing his pursuit for a better life from a working student in college to an entrepreneur after graduation.
The student volunteers together with the community workers facilitated the program that included fun-filled games for children between 1 and 12 years of age. A total of 175 kids were recipients of this year’s “Christmas Cheers for Children.” Each received a bag packed with school supplies and a basic hygiene kit. Before the distribution, Dr. Marilou Cao, Director of Volunteerism Service, demonstrated to the participants the basics of hand sanitation. The FEUAFI represented by Mr. Vic Cruz handed over a set of “arnis” to the community officials to be used as sporting equipment and as well for self-defense.
In celebration of the Christmas season, Dr. Cao, officially closed the program with a message of hope paying tribute to the participation of each stakeholder in this activity.
