FEU Comm senior is PH’s chosen one for IPSC London

Fourth Year Bachelor of Arts in Communication student One Carlo Diaz will represent the Philippines in the International Public Speaking Competition of the English Speaking Union (ESU) 2017 in London. Diaz, who currently serves as President of the FEU Oratorical and Debate Council won the ESU National Search Grand Finals held last February 11 at FEU Makati.

Each finalist gave a five-minute speech on the theme “Peace is not an absence of war.” Diaz shared that he received a lot of help from his fellow ORADEC members and adviser FEU Student Development Director Joeven Castro to prepare his speech.

“I was hesitant of sharing a personal story at first, but knowing ESU, it has always been about how personal stories can be turned into a speech that can affect people in one way or another.”

Diaz is the third Tamaraw to become the ESU Philippines representative after Ryan Kaliph Buenafe in 2002 and Weber Amores in 2007. He also hopes to replicate the world championship wins of UP Diliman’s Patricia Evangelista in 2004 and Gian Dapul of the Philippine Science High School in 2008.

Around 60 contestants from all over the Philippines competed. The other two finalists were from UP Diliman and Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

In preparing for the IPSC in London, Diaz is looking forward to the training he will receive from the ESU Philippines board. He also credits his victory to his student organization.

“ORADEC has helped me become a good speaker. It taught me how to manage stage jitters, to think on my feet and to create logical arguments.”
