“I envision a culture of love for chess in the country. I am impassioned to promote it as
a competitive sport among the youth and aspiring players and to professionalize chess
education. Chess develops not just our mental faculties but also our values as a true
sportsperson. I wish to see chess as part of our basic education curriculum, a fitting
subject that teaches kids the discipline to focus, create better decisions and intensify
their passion on reading.”

On what Janelle wants to do for the Philippines
“I would like to lobby the implementation of the long overdue 2009 DepEd Curriculum
Circular instructing the inclusion of chess in the Basic Education Curriculum. It may take years for the lawmakers to heed on my advocacy. I’d continue on conducting simultaneous  chess exhibitions as a tool for that realization.”

High school students attend talk on education during Spanish period


FEU Manila welcomed around 200 senior high school students from several institutions yesterday July 13, 2017. The students attended a special talk given by Mr. Roberto Blanco of The Spanish National Research Council. The topic for the day was “The Philippines in the Eyes of Spain: The Colonization of the Philippines as taught in the Spanish Basic Education.”

Outstanding alumnus Abacan named to BSP Monetary Board

Antonio S. Abacan

Prominent banker Antonio S. Abacan Jr. has been named a new member of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) Monetary Board. Mr. Abacan is an FEU Bachelor of Science in Accountancy graduate and FEU Outstanding Alumnus awardee in 2007. He was appointed together with Peter B. Favila and Felipe M. Medalla, who will serve a second term in the board.

“They were carefully chosen by the President to ensure that we continue with fiscal policies that would help sustain our growth momentum and attract more investments. I’m certain that Messrs. Medalla, Favila and Abacan will carry on the great service set by their predecessors,” according to Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III.

Mr. Abacan served as president of Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. from 1993 to April 2006 and of Philippine Savings Bank and Unibancard Corp. from 1988 to 1991.

IARFA prof wins Artist in Residency Program of Alliance Francaise


Far Eastern University Special Lecturer Dexter Sy was recently named the winner of Alliance française de Manille’s Philippine Artist Residency Program 2017. Sy will be in France from August 1 to September 8, 2017 and will have a solo exhibition on September 7.

Sy shared he is excited to collaborate with other residency artists and his presentation will likely be similar to his recent Form of the Formless one-man show at the Ayala Museum.

The award-winning artist is already an established name in the international art scene as he has already conducted exhibitions in China, Italy, Japan, Germany, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States since graduating from FEU with a degree in Fine Arts, Major in Advertising in 2005.

“My works evolve more on concept and its more mature now and simple.”

Sy offered an advice for young artists who dream of thriving in the local art scene.

“You need to be very sensitive, ready to fail, work hard and do your best, and lastly what ever you do put God first.
