A legendary figure in Philippine comics is set to make a big return as FEU alumni and brothers Damy Velasquez III and Tommy Velasquez are launching “The New DI-13″. Their grandfather Damy Velasquez created and wrote the original DI-13 series in the mid-1940s until the 1960s, while his older brother Tony Velasquez is known as the “Father of Tagalog Komiks.”
DI-13 was a hit among avid comics readers and a film adaptation was made in 1955 entitled “Adventures of DI-13″, which starred Jose Romulo.
The upcoming release is both a modern update and a continuation of Damy III and Tommy’s grandfather’s work.
Damy III is an AB Mass Communication graduate and served as faculty in the Department of Communication for nearly two decades, while Tommy is a Fine Arts Major in Advertising graduate and a graphic artist and illustrator for a local and international promotions company.
Despite pursuing different career paths, they knew they would venture into comics sooner or later.
“I’ve always felt that I should continue my grandfather’s legacy as a Velasquez & his namesake. He is a komiks pioneer so I decided to honor my heritage by re-introducing the series to modern readers,” said Damy III.
Damy Sr and Tony Velasquez are credited for jumpstarting the local comics industry and mentored Darna creator Mars Ravelo, National Artist Francisco V. Coching and numerous comics greats.
Issue #0 of The New DI-13 will be released on August 4, 2018 exclusively at Komikon Indieket 2018 for PHP50. Damy III shared that The New DI-13 #0 is essentially the prologue that sets the scene for issue #1.
“What I can say is the DI or Department of Investigation has evolved from the original. Also while it’s a modern story, it is inspired by classic DI-13 detective elements. There is definitely a new agent Trese. Who he is, comics readers will have to find out in issue #0.”
While the komiks series is the main focus, Damy III is optimistic this re-incarnation of DI-13 can achieve the crossover appeal of the original.
“Hopefully, it is made into a film again. I’ve already pitched it to a well-known film production company. I think it can also work as a television series. We are currently finalizing a deal with an online comics platform to feature the original series as well as The New DI-13.”
