In line with its commitment to institutional excellence, learner-centered education, and responsible data governance, Far Eastern University (FEU) conducted the “Data Privacy and Educational Organization Management System (EOMS) Orientation and Updates” for all its employees, thus providing a comprehensive platform to strengthen awareness, capability, and accountability in data privacy and quality management practices within the institution.

“[Data privacy in higher education institutions is important], particularly in handling personal, academic, and institutional information. Anchored on the provisions of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 or RA 10173, employees were reminded that safeguarding data is not solely a regulatory requirement but a shared responsibility,” said Michael Liggayu, Data Protection Officer of the FEU Group of Schools and Quality Management Officer of FEU Manila. “Proper data handling, confidentiality, security protocols, and ethical use of information [are] essential practices that protect stakeholders and uphold institutional integrity.”

Liggayu also underscored the EOMS, which is guided by ISO 21001. As an internationally recognized standard specifically designed for educational institutions.”

“[The] ISO 21001 focuses on enhancing learner satisfaction, improving educational processes, and ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education,” said Liggayu. “The transition to ISO 21001 strengthens [FEU’s] ability to align its operations with its vision and mission while promoting consistency, efficiency, and continuous improvement across all units.”

A key highlight of the orientation was the connection between ISO 21001 implementation and individual Key Performance Indicators. Employees gained a deeper understanding of how their daily responsibilities, documentation practices, and service delivery directly contribute to institutional outcomes. Compliance with standard procedures, maintenance of accurate records, participation in audits, and adherence to policies are all measurable actions that influence both personal performance and organizational success.

“The seminar also reinforced the important role of each employee in ensuring compliance with data privacy laws and ISO 21001 standards,” said Marilou Malaban, manager of HR. “[Every member of FEU]—regardless of role—contributes to building a culture of quality and accountability. Employees are expected to practice responsible data management, follow established workflows, report risks or breaches, and actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as audits, corrective actions, and process reviews.”

Malabanan said through the EOMS orientation, FEU reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture that values data protection, quality education, and operational excellence. She added that by aligning individual performance with institutional standards and legal requirements, employees are empowered to become active partners in achieving organizational goals and sustaining compliance.

“The conduct of the EOMS orientation marks a significant step toward strengthening institutional readiness for ISO 21001 implementation and ensuring full compliance with data privacy regulations,” said Malabanan. “More importantly, it reinforces the collective responsibility of all employees in delivering quality service while safeguarding the trust and information of the FEU community.”
