About the Piece
Is watercolor the most “difficult” medium? The debate is endless. Watercolor – a pigment pulverized with a water-soluble binder, such as gum arabic, and dissolved in water – poses its unique challenge and reward to artists. What is admitted by all, however, is watercolor’s enduring quality: its transparency. Watercolor is the only medium that allows for light to emanate from the pristine material itself: paper.
Despite its humble subject, Scenery evokes the lyricism of the landscape, achieved mainly through the use of the wet-on-wet technique, whereby the paper has been previously rendered damp and wet prior to the application of the watercolor pigment. It is this technique that makes possible the flooding of the pigment and the diffusion of forms, thus transforming the scenery into a limpid, dream-like apparition
