Dusk, Stratus #12

MONA and SOLER Santos

About the Piece

A grid is defined as a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines that cross each other to make a set of squares. By superimposing a grid on his field and open skies in Dusk, Soler literally pushes the landscape into the background, changing the viewer’s perception and relationship with the work.

Each minute square has been framed for analysis, effecting a separation from the overall design, imputing an abstract form, since the internal relationship of the details within the square has been freed from its distinctly landscape orientation, reducing it to fragmentation.

Dusk, the time of day purportedly depicted, is suggested by the darkened color tones, implying that light is a transient and fleeting phenomenon.
