About the Piece
In Fishermen at Early Dawn I, Fernando Amorsolo’s panoramic sunlight slowly emerges from the horizon, out of the blanket of darkness, and becomes a presence so pervasive that the figures of the fishermen preparing to sail seaward have been reduced to silhouette. However, in Early Dawn II, when the sun has started to rise, not yet as a noontime glare but a soft lambent light, the figures of the fishermen have been rendered more visible. In these two works on the same subject, Amorsolo strove to capture a “vision of the moment” in two successive stages.
