To the FEU Community:

In light of the government’s imposition of an Enhanced Community Quarantine between 17 March and 14 April 2020, and in order to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all the members of the FEU community, all FEU schools are adopting the following measures:

1. The continuation of learning that is not dependent on access to the internet 

Realizing that everyone is having to adjust to and cope with a host of COVID-19 related challenges, including its psychological impact and the home-quarantine conditions, FEU is suspending online classes while continuing with online learning activities during the quarantine period. 

Hence,  faculty are instructed to provide students with reasonable assignments, such as readings, guide and review questions, and projects, so that those who have the resources at home as well as the time and inclination are enabled to continue with their learning journeys. (All these assignments must be doable offline, and neither online submissions nor online quizzes or exams are allowed.) Faculty are also urged to make themselves available and accessible to students who may wish to engage or consult them on FEU-on-Canvas or by email.  

For their part, students are encouraged – to the extent that they can – to continue to take up their learning activities (as this can be a healthy distraction) and share the assignments with classmates who may be in more difficult circumstances.

2. Work-at-home and salary provisions 

All FEU schools will be closed during the quarantine period, each manned only by a skeletal workforce, with stringent health, work safety, and security measures in place. Only designated employees of departments with extremely important, necessary, and urgent functions will be allowed limited access for specified time periods.

All academic and non-academic staff will work at home and receive regular pay. Contractual staff (such as graduate assistants, janitors, and security guards) who are classified by existing labor standards as operating in a “no-work, no-pay” framework will be extended financial assistance.

Please be assured that we are doing our utmost to keep the community safe. These are not normal times and, in terms of scale and depth of consequences, possibly a once-in-a-lifetime event, the economic impact of which will be great.  I call on all members of our community to practice charity and compassion in this trying period.

March 19, 2020 (Update)

Learning in the Time of the Extended Community Quarantine

FEU has moved the majority of learning offline for the period of March 19 to April 14. Guidance and instruction will continue online for students who wish to consult and continue to engage with their teachers.

Teachers will be required to post reading material and other input and assignments on Canvas no later than March 20 to cover the period between March 19 and April 14, 2020.

Assignments may be formative or summative and will form part of the final grade. Students are expected to work on these assignments offline. The deadlines of these assignments will be on April 15 or after.

Faculty will be available for consultation/discussion through Canvas or through email on regular schedules which will be indicated.
