Far Eastern University nearly pulled off a championship double in the
University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 Collegiate Athletics Championships. The university reclaimed the women’s titles but narrowly missed out on the top prize in the men’s side.
The five-day meet was held at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium.
The Lady Tamaraws scored 84 points on the final day, finishing with 397.5 points to claim their league-leading 25th UAAP women’s championship and their first since Season 81. In the Women’s medal count, FEU collected five golds, eight silvers, and eight bronzes.
Head coach Roselyn Hamero expressed great satisfaction with her team’s performance.
“It was an awesome feeling because everyone knew how hard it was to get the championship. We had challenges recruiting new talent and battling through injuries. I’m very satisfied because I never thought our winning margin would reach 100 points,” she said”
Coach Rose, who earned her 12th UAAP title in 18 seasons, was also amazed by the development of her wards.
“When they were newbies, they were like babies whom I had to guide step-by-step. Now they perform like real Tamaraws. They really charge through the competition,” the long-time mentor added.
Meanwhile, the race for the Men’s overall championship was very tight between the University of the Philippines and FEU.
Going into the final day of the tournament, the Fighting Maroons only had a 26-point lead over the Tamaraws.
The Tams had to win the gold in the final event, the 4×400-meter relay, to snag the title but finished with a bronze. In the final points tally, UP and FEU were only separated by four points. In the Men’s medal count, FEU collected five golds, three silvers, and six bronzes.
It was still an improvement for the Tamaraws after finishing third place in the final standings of UAAP Season 86.
