Former Sen. Orlando “Orly” Mercado recently spoke to students at FEU Makati on transparency and accountability in good governance.
He tackled the current issues plaguing the country, particularly the persistent challenges of corruption that undermine institutions and public trust. By connecting past lessons with present realities, he underscored the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership as guiding principles for the country’s future.
“What would you say to your fellow senators, the alleged corrupt contractors, and the people who are hungry for answers?” one student asked Mercado during the open forum.
Mercado’s response reinforced the importance of courage, vigilance, and integrity in leadership, leaving the audience with a renewed sense of responsibility as future nation-builders.
Their exchange was aimed to challenge leaders to confront corruption directly while reminding everyone of the public’s demand for honesty and reform.
The former senator reflected on his early years as a student activist, sharing how those experiences shaped his values and lifelong commitment to public service. He recounted his perspectives on the political climate of his time, offering students a glimpse into the struggles and reforms that continue to shape the nation’s democratic journey.
Mercado, a distinguished public servant, journalist, and educator, is best known for his fearless reporting during the Martial Law years, his authorship of landmark legislation such as the Consumer Act (Rep. Act No. 7394) and the Generics Act (Rep. Act No. 6675), and his service as secretary of the Department of National Defense. His career has been defined by a consistent advocacy for integrity, accountability, and reform in both government and civil society.
The session also highlighted Mercado’s legacy as a journalist, legislator, and statesman, inspiring students to embrace their role as active participants in building a more ethical, resilient, and responsible society.
The FEU Makati Student Council, in partnership with the Institute of Accountancy, Business, and Finance Makati Academic Office, hosted Mercado’s talk.
