Last May 17, 2023, the Far Eastern University was graced with the presence of Noam Chomsky in the Series of Expert Talks (SET) 3. The focus of his talk is on “Language and the Miracle Creed.” This event is made possible through the collaboration of different offices spearheaded by the FEU Institute of Education Graduate Studies and Transnational Education under the leadership of Dr. Romualdo Mabuan, Department Chairperson of FEU-IE GSTE.

The event received more than 22,000 registrations and was held through the Zoom Meeting platform with 1,000 participants. It was also broadcast simultaneously through the official Facebook pages of the university namely: Far Eastern University, FEU Manila-Institute of Education, and FEU Institute of Education Graduate Studies and Transnational Education. The livestream garnered an approximate of 47,000 views among all channels. Prof. Dr. Noam Chomsky is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in the world today with hundreds of published books, articles, and essays, and 477,000+ Google Scholar citations on a wide range of topics, including linguistics, philosophy, politics, and social issues. Among his groundbreaking books are “Syntactic Structures,” “Language and Mind,” “Aspects

of the Theory of Syntax,” and “The Minimalist Program,” each of which has made distinct contributions to the development of the field. He has received numerous awards, including the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences, the Helmholtz Medal, and the Ben Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science to name a few.

The talk given by Prof. Dr. Chomsky posed thought-provoking ideas in relation to Language and the Miracle Creed. His insights and ideas challenged the participants to think deeper about the nature of language and its place in human cognition. Moreover, the FEU graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, staff, and different professionals in education and other related fields all over the Philippines had an opportunity to engage with Prof. Dr. Chomsky during the allotted Q&A session after his talk. There were a lot of questions from the participants. A great deal of interest was about the future of artificial intelligence. The community is grateful for the privilege to have their questions addressed.

The webinar is part of the FEU-IE-GSTE Series of Expert Talks (SET) 3, which is a professional development initiative to provide FEU faculty members and students with valuable insights and knowledge from industry experts to enhance their professional skills and expertise. As the FEU Institute of Education stays true to its commitment to education, the community can expect more experts in different fields to join us in this project very soon.

The event was made possible through the synergy of the following: FEU’s Office of the Chair, Office of the President, Academic Affairs Office, Academic Development Office, Academic Services Office, Corporate Affairs Office, Marketing and Communication Office, Education Technology Office, Information Technology Services, Office of the Graduate Studies, and Institute of Education.
